What are Twitter Spaces?
Twitter Spaces is a chatroom where people can have audio conversations in real-time.
Twitter described it as a”place to come together, built around the voices of the people using Twitter, your Twitter community.”
Hosts can create a space on a topic they like and invite people to join as speakers, co-hosts, or simply listeners. Anyone can join a Twitter space unless the host blocks them. Twitter has an entirely different section dedicated to Spaces. Users can find spaces on any topic of their choice and join in to learn and share their ideas and opinions with an engaged audience from this section.
Earlier only accounts with more than 600 followers could host a space on Twitter, but anyone can start a Twitter space now.
How to Start a Space on Twitter Spaces?
There are two ways to start a Space on Twitter. We will walk you through both of them:
- Using the compose icon on the home page
- From the Spaces Section
Step 1: Name The Space
While creating a Twitter space, you will have to name it and add relevant categories to make it easier for listeners to find and join your space on Twitter. Naming your Twitter space is very important as it’s how your listeners will get an idea of what this space is about and whether it interests them. Be specific and direct while naming the space. You can also add relevant hashtags in your Twitter space title to get more visibility and discoverability.
As a host, you have complete control over who joins and speaks in your space. Here are all the features that you can access in the Twitter space as a host, along with guides to better help you understand these features:
Step 2: Unmute Your mic
By default, your mic is muted when you start a new space on Twitter. When a few people have joined, and you are ready to speak, unmute the mic and start speaking. The purple audio waves icon next to the name of the person denotes that they are currently speaking. With the purple waves, everyone in the space knows who is speaking at any given moment.
Step 3: Turn On Captions
As engaging as audio conversations on Twitter are, sometimes it’s challenging to keep up with the conversation and various speakers talking simultaneously. Captions can help listeners quickly catch up with the conversation. If the host allows Twitter to generate automatic captions, then listeners can get the option to switch on captions.
Here’s how you can turn on captions for your space on Twitter:
- Start a Space on Twitter
- Click on the three dots icon at the top
- Tap on Adjust settings
- Enable Captions
- Now your listeners can turn on captions anytime from the three-dot menu.
Step 4: Record Live Audio Conversations In The Space
Hosts can save and replay the Spaces they create. Toggle on Record Space while creating a Space. A recording sign will show at the top of the screen during recording to indicate that the host is recording the Space. After the Space has ended, you will be able to check how many people attended as well as a link to share through Twitter. You can also View information to Tweet the recording under Notifications. Edit start time is a feature in the host settings that allows you to choose where to start your recording. This eliminates any dead air time that may occur at the beginning of a Space.
These are some of the features that will help you start and successfully manage space on Twitter as a host. But that’s not it. Ever since Twitter Spaces was launched in 2021, Twitter has constantly worked on the feature guided by the user feedback data to improve and enhance the user experience on the Spaces. So with these basic features, Spaces has special features like muting everyone in the Space with a single tap, changing your voice using a voice transformer, and many more.
Step 5: Add Co-hosts and Speakers
A host can add 2 co-hosts and 10 speakers to the Twitter space. As a host, you can invite people to co-host or be a speaker in your Space. A co-host can invite and remove co-hosts, speakers, and listeners, but they can’t remove the host. There are two ways to invite someone to co-host or speak on your Twitter Space.
- Using the Manage People icon at the bottom
Once you start a Space on Twitter, you will find a small icon menu at the bottom of your screen. Tap on the people icon (it’s the second one from the left). Here, you will find the list of everyone who has joined your space and their respective roles (Whether they are listeners, speakers, or co-hosts).
How to Send Co-host Invite?
You need to tap on Invite Co-hosts and search for the person’s name whom you want to add. Once you find the person, tap on their profile and send the invite. You cannot send a co-host invite to someone who is not live in the Space.
How to Send Speaker Invite?
For the Speaker invites, there is no such restriction. If the person has already joined the space, then they will receive a notification on their screen notifying them that they have been invited to speak or co-host. If they accept your invitation, their status will change from listener to co-host or speaker.
If the user you have sent an invite to be a speaker is not live on the space then they will receive a DM notifying them that XYZ has invited you to join this Twitter Space. If they accept the invitation and join the space, then they are asked if they want to join as a “Listener or a Speaker?” Depending on their choice, they are added to the Space as a listener or co-host/speaker.
But this restriction is only limited to the co-host invites. You can send a speaker invite to anyone on Twitter. Whether they follow you or are not on the Space doesn’t matter.
- Tapping on the Person’s profile icon in the Space
Another way to send a co-host/speaker invite is by tapping on the person’s profile icon in the space. A list will appear; tap on “Invite to Co-host.”
Steps To Invite People To Join Your Twitter Space?
Getting people to join your Twitter space can be daunting. You can’t just rely on people finding your space through the search. Tweeting your Twitter space link can help you get people into your Space faster.
How to find the link to your Twitter Space?
You can easily get the link with a customized “Join me in my space” button by tapping on the blue plus icon at the bottom. Next, add a message that you want to share along with the link in your tweet. Once you have added the relevant hashtags to reach a bigger audience, click on Tweet.

Share and Pin a Tweet In Your Space
You can pin a tweet at the top of your conversation in Twitter space. It helps to keep the conversation on track and also assists listeners in getting some additional visual context to the topic on hand. Only a host can pin a tweet in the space on Twitter.
Here’s how you can share a Tweet In Spaces:
- Find the tweet you want to pin your space.
- Tap on the share icon below the tweet.
- From the pop-up list, click on your space title.
The tweet will then appear at the top of your space. If you want to remove the tweet, just click on the cross on the tweet. You can share multiple tweets this way on your Twitter space, but only one at a time.
Additional Features On Twitter Spaces
- Schedule A Space: You can schedule your Space and share it on Twitter to let your followers know about it in advance. Users can set a reminder on the app itself to join the Space whenever it starts. The option to schedule a Space on Twitter is available when you name your space. Instead of tapping on Start now after naming your space on Twitter, tap on the small calendar/clock button next to it. Select the date and time for your Space and share the schedule on Twitter.
- Mute A Speaker or Everyone: The option to mute everyone will appear on the screen. Just tap on the “Mute Everyone” button. Once everyone is muted, only the host’s mic is unmuted. Only the host and co-hosts can view the “Mute everyone” button in the Space.
- Remove a Listener or Speaker From The Twitter Space: If someone is being a nuisance in the Space, the host has the power to mute or even remove the user from the Twitter Space. To remove a listener from the Space, click on the listener’s profile icon and select the option “Remove.”
- Report/Block a Member From Your Space On Twitter: Anyone in the space can report or block a listener in the space. Follow the same steps as we mentioned above, and instead of removing, tap on Block/Report.
- Use a Voice Transformer: If you don’t want to share your real voice in the audio shared on Spaces, you can use the “Voice Transformer” to tweak your voice. To enable this feature, click on the magic wand icon at the bottom. Slide through the various voice options. Once you have found the one, you like to start talking to test your new voice.
